Winter Begins... Officially
At 11:47am today, the suns rays will shine directly over the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5 degrees latitude south marking the first day of astronomical winter for us in the Northern Hemisphere.
Watch closely, the sun will be at its lowest point in the sky, today, than it is at any other time of the year. We are down to 8 hours and 41 minutes of daylight, which is cut nearly cut in half from the Summer Solstice back in June when we see 15 hours and 42 minutes of daylight. At least we have daylight... The Arctic Circle is in complete darkness until middle/end of January! Those are some hardy folks that live up there.
December Numbers So Far
We went from the 3rd warmest November on record in the St. Cloud area to temperatures running nearly 4 degrees colder than average for the first 20 days of the month. We most certainly have had a wintry chill to start December, but snowfall this season has been bleak with a seasonal deficit of nearly 7 inches. December snow numbers are running near average, but we may get a little more by the end of the week, which could could another block buster for some folks in the Upper Midwest... Stay tuned. Below is an image of the 5 day precipitation accumulation from 6pm Sunday to 6pm Friday - the area of interest is circled in red/yellow - this is where the precipitation will be 'mostly' all snow (details to be hammered out in the coming days) however, this could be a whopper for some!
